Nearly every guest deciding between two boats is really deciding between two hull types. Once you understand what each one does well, the choice usually makes itself in about a minute.
The monohull motor yacht
A classic yacht — Sea Ray, Azimut, Sunseeker, Cranchi — has one deep hull, big engines and an enclosed interior with cabins. What you get is speed and privacy. You reach Isla Mujeres or a distant reef faster, which matters a lot on a four-hour charter where every minute of cruising is a minute not swimming. Air-conditioned cabins mean somewhere to change, nap or escape the sun, and the interiors feel like a small apartment.
The trade-off is deck space. A 50-foot motor yacht has less usable outdoor area than a 45-foot catamaran, and it rolls more at anchor. For six to twelve guests who value comfort and speed, it is the right boat. The Azimut 50 and Cranchi 50 are our workhorses here.
The catamaran
Two hulls, a wide platform between them, and a trampoline deck up front. Catamarans are stable — they barely rock at anchor, which is the single biggest factor for anyone prone to seasickness or bringing small kids or grandparents. They also give you far more space per foot of length: shaded cockpit, big dining table, room to spread out.
They are slower and they draw less water, which is actually an advantage in shallow sandbars. For groups over twelve, for families, and for anyone who wants the day to feel like a floating terrace rather than a fast trip, the catamaran wins. The same logic applies further south, where Cozumel yacht rentals run the El Cielo route. The Lagoon 45 handles up to 30 guests; the Leopard 51 is the luxury end with three cabins and a chef.
Quick decision guide
- Group of 6 to 10, want to cover distance: motor yacht.
- Group of 15 to 30: catamaran, no question — the deck space is the whole point.

- Celebration with music and a bar setup: catamaran, for the flat open deck.
- Going all the way to Cozumel and back in a day: motor yacht, for the speed.

What does not change
Either way you get a licensed captain and crew, fuel, unlimited open bar, food on board and snorkel equipment. The difference is the shape of the day, not the level of service.
