This is a full-day trip

Cozumel is about an hour across the channel from Puerto Aventuras, so this only works as an eight-hour charter. Anything shorter and you spend the day travelling rather than swimming. Book it on a calm forecast and leave early — the crossing is smoothest in the morning.

El Cielo and Palancar

El Cielo is a shallow sand flat on the southwest side of the island where the water is waist-deep and starfish sit on the bottom. It is the single most photographed spot in Cozumel and the reason most people make the crossing. Palancar, a little further out, is one of the best drift reefs in the Caribbean — better suited to confident snorkellers and divers.

Which boats can make the crossing

Not every vessel is suited to open water for that distance. We put this route on the 47-foot and larger boats: the Sea Ray 47, Sundancer 48, Cranchi 50, Sea Ray 51, Sun Seeker 60 and the larger catamarans. Smaller boats stay on the Riviera Maya side.

What it costs

A full day to Cozumel starts around $1,150 USD and goes up with the size of the boat. The rate covers captain and crew, fuel for the crossing, open bar, food on board and snorkel gear. Marina and environmental fees are $20 USD per person.

FAQ

Common questions

How long is the crossing?

About an hour each way from Puerto Aventuras, depending on the boat and the sea. That leaves roughly five hours around the island on an eight-hour charter.

Can we dive instead of snorkel?

Diving needs specific permits and equipment, so it is available on a limited number of boats and has to be arranged in advance. Tell us when you enquire and we will confirm what is possible for your date.

Is it worth it over Isla Mujeres?

Different trips. Cozumel has the better reefs and El Cielo is unlike anything on the mainland side, but it is a longer, more committed day. Isla Mujeres is easier and more social.

What if the channel is rough?

The captain decides on the morning. If the crossing is not comfortable we redirect the day to the INAH reef and Xpu-Ha rather than push through it.
